Prof. Silvio Danese, MD, PhD, is a leading gastroenterologist and internationally recognized expert in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. He earned his medical degree with honors from the Catholic University School of Medicine in Rome in 1999, completed his residency in Gastroenterology there in 2003, and obtained his PhD in Metabolism (with a focus on IBD pathophysiology) in 2004. From 2001 to 2004, he conducted research as a post-doctoral fellow and research associate in Prof. Claudio Fiocchi’s laboratory at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, laying the foundation for his expertise in immune-mediated gastrointestinal disorders.

Since October 2021, Prof. Danese has served as Full Professor of Gastroenterology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan and Director of the Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Unit at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital. Previously, he headed the IBD Center and ImmunoCenter at IRCCS Humanitas in Rozzano, where he was also Full Professor of Gastroenterology at Humanitas University and directed its residency program. A prolific researcher and former President of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization (ECCO), he has authored numerous high-impact publications on IBD pathogenesis, novel therapies, and clinical management, advancing translational approaches in biotech and personalized medicine for immune-mediated diseases.
